The first family reunion I went to with my husband was quite the experience. And I mean that in the best way possible!
Once a year, my hubby’s family all packs up and heads for Kathleen’s house. (Kathleen is one of Jerrod’s aunts). By the high point of the weekend there are about 25-30 people, all staying in the same house. It’s crazy and amazing, all at the same time.
One of the things that I always thought was pretty neat was that in the mornings, all the aunts get up early and cook a huge southern breakfast for everyone. I mean, the works! And it was here that I was introduced to Chocolate Gravy.
My husband thinks this is all very amusing, since he’s grown up with chocolate gravy, but he wasn’t quite sure whether to be shocked or amused that I had no idea what he was talking about. Chocolate GRAVY? Like chocolate sauce? Is it a glaze? I didn’t get it!
Oh, but I get it now. And I make it on special occasions now, too. So, without further ado, I now present…
Chocolate Gravy
1/2 cup cocoa
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
1 tablespoon butter, softened
2 teaspoons vanilla
Whisk the cocoa, flour, sugar and salt together in a bowl until there are no lumps.
Add the vanilla to the milk.
Pour the milk into the mixture and whisk until well incorporated.
Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring almost constantly, until its consistency is similar to gravy. This will take about 7-10 minutes.
Remove from heat as soon as you feel it thicken, add the butter and stir until it’s completely melted. Serve immediately.
I originally found this recipe HERE, but I’ve made a few changes to it along the way!
Whatcha think? Have you ever had Chocolate Gravy? I mean, starting your day off with chocolate…how can you go wrong?!

What??!! 🙂 So do you just put it over biscuits? Or a plain cookie? I’ve never heard of chocolate gravy, but it sounds like something I would love!
It’s best served over biscuits with a side of bacon 🙂 But I’ll bet it would be good for dipping shortbread cookies in, too!
I have never heard of such a yummy, delicious gravy! I cannot wait to try this. I have pinned the recipe for later 🙂
Thanks for the pin, Courtney! 🙂
Count me in for anything chocolate! 🙂
Me too!!! 🙂
I’ve never heard of it, but I can’t imagine a better way to start my day than having chocolate for breakfast 🙂
I know, right?!
You are killing me with all your super good recipes. I love chocolate and can’t eat it any longer. I still make things for my family though.
Oh no! Do you eat carob? I wonder if maybe you could substitute…
Hi Kristen, this sounds like a much simpler way to make a gagache. 🙂 Who doesn’t like chocolate…even for breakfast. 🙂
What is a gagache? I’m not familiar…sounds interesting!
I am sure this could have all kinds of interesting possibilities…my creative mind is already stirring things up. Thanks for sharing…funny thing about regional differences, too. Being a native New Yorker, I loved Baked Ziti, but my then boyfriend, from Ohio, had no idea what it was. Turns out (at the time at least) it was a pasta only sold in a specialty shop! Have a great day!
I make Baked Ziti all the way down here in Florida! I LOVE to hear about the differences, though – normally find some yummy recipes in those conversations!
I have NEVER heard of chocolate gravy before! It looks and sounds soooooo goooooodddd!! You know I have chocolate in my veins! LOL
I know it! LOL
Is that chocolate gravy on bread???
Yes! Those are just some buttermilk biscuits I threw in the oven 🙂
YUM! That would be awesome on pancakes! I am going to make this for my grandchildren as a special little treat.
Ooo…it WOULD be good on pancakes!
Lord have mercy on us all now!!! Chocolate gravy! Never heard of it but my husband is going to absolutely love this! I’m going to impress him with this and earn myself some serious ‘brownie’ points 🙂
HA! You go, girl!
Lord a mercy, that looks divine! I have never heard of chocolate gravy but I think it might be the best invention EVER! Thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool, huh? I’m trying to figure out how to make strawberry gravy next!
yumm… I am going to make this. so delish looking! Love all the pictures 🙂
Thanks Vinma! Hope you enjoy!
I have never had chocolate gravy. That would be a super way to start the day!
I think so, too!
Wow! My family would be all over this!!
I’ll bet!
One word: DECADENT! Okay, you know me, I can’t ever stop at one word. This looks luscious and yummy! Are you serving that over biscuits or scones? I’ve never heard of chocolate gravy before, now I can;t wait to give it a try. 🙂 Pinned!

HA! You’re funny 🙂 And these are just some buttermilk biscuits I threw in the oven. But over scones, that would be good, I’ll bet! Thanks for the pin!
Nope! Never heard of this. I would have to sub the flour for something gluten free for my daughter but it might be fun to give this a try.
Yes, I haven’t tried to make it gluten-free yet, but I’m sure it would work!
My husband and I both grew up in the south. I had never heard of chocolate gravy, but he grew up eating it. He loves it. I’ll have to make it for him using your recipe. Thanks!
Hope he enjoys!
Never heard of chocolate gravy but it makes me want to drink it for breakfast lunch and dinner. Totally fine, right? Thanks for the recipe btw and I will be pinning to make some time!
Cool! Thanks, Carli! 🙂
Goodness gracious, if you could see the look of awe on my face, jaw dropped in pure .. umm, chocolate lust ! .. I cannot believe I have never seen this in a jar somewhere, although I’m sure it’s best made the way you’ve posted! I can imagine it over a warm scone or even croissant. I think surely GOD must have invented chocolate!
HA! Of course He did!
You’re kidding! It’s really chocolate! I have heard of this (just recently), but I assumed that it must have just been another word for brown gravy (didn’t want to get my hopes up, I guess). I would totally try this! 🙂
Oh yes, it’s really chocolate!
My grandmother used to make chocolate gravy for breakfast all the time. I was just thinking about that the other day!
How neat!
Oh My!! What is this Chocolate Gravy you speak of? lol
This looks so good! And it’s my favorite kind….EASY. I want to try this with pancakes or crepes. My children would go crazy. Pinned!!
Hope you enjoy, Cherie!
we eat it all the time!! recipe is a little different. It’s also our traditional Christmas breakfast!!
I’m glad to hear that someone else enjoys it, too!
What?! At first I was repulsed because I was thinking chocolate gravy over potatoes, but now I’m thinking crepes, cookies, etc nice for a brunch during the holidays.
Oh yes!
PERFECT way to start the day in my opinion! I think that gravy’s good for three meals a day–at least!
HA! That could work! LOL
Oh my goodness, this looks so good!
Thanks, Katherine! Hope you get a chance to try it out!
These look so good! I will have to try this recipe!
Hope you enjoy!
Have never heard of chocolate gravy before now either. It does look delicious though. 🙂
You’ll be hooked!
Goodness, I got so hungry in the middle of the night right now looking at your chocolate gravy picture.
