Over the Weekend

First of all, let me share with you that I’m guest-posting today for the lovely Becky over at Raising Loveliness!

So did you have a great weekend?! Ours was a bit busy, and I’m totally suffering for it now. (Well, my allergies are acting up. That probably has nothing to do with the weekend, but I’ll lay the blame there because I have nowhere else to place it! Ha!)

Accomplished on Friday:

  • Baked, iced and decorated 60 made-from-scratch-icing-and-all Red Velvet Cupcakes. (I know, I’m nuts. Recipe for these here tomorrow!)
  • Prepped everything we were in charge of bringing to my mother-in-law’s 50th birthday party

Accomplished on Saturday:

  • Slept until 9:00 a.m. (YES, this is an accomplishment! I had been up into the wee hours of the morning all week long – and I’m NEVER able to sleep as late as 9:00, so I was pretty proud of myself)
  • Had a wonderful celebration for my mother-in-law
  • Ran some errands
  • Caught up on programs we had missed throughout the week
  • Tried to fend off my allergy attack

Accomplished on Sunday:

  • Sunday School, Choir, Church
  • TOOK A NAP (Gotta love a nap!)
  • Did a little spot-cleaning
  • Gave in to the allergy attack
  • Took my dad to dinner for his birthday (yes, my dad’s birthday is the same day as my mother-in-law’s! Crazy!)

Since my husband now is off on Saturdays, as well (he used to have to work Saturdays) it feels like such a waste of our time together to do all the cleaning and yard work on Saturdays, when we could be doing something fun! Well, MORE fun. He likes doing the yard, and I like cleaning…but you know what I mean. So I’ve gone back to doing an item of cleaning each day of the week, so the house pretty much stays clean all week long. That’s nice! The thing is, I was looking for a cleaning schedule/printable so I could actually have something hanging on the fridge, and the search has disturbed me.

Is it just me, or wasn’t everyone taught to clean from the top down? (You dust first, then you do the floors after that, so that anything you dusted off of the furniture would be taken away with the rest of the stuff on the floor.) Right? Am I wrong? Because every printable I found had instructions of cleaning the floors one day and dusting the next? Isn’t that counterproductive? Maybe I’m finally losing my mind…

What did YOU do over the weekend? And for goodness sake, how do you clean your house?

  1. Oh, that’s why cleaning schedules never worked for me, they are just wrong ;). I come from a different corner of the world and was taught to clean from the top down, too.

  2. I stayed home from church on Sunday to start a major cleaning… and accidentally slept until 12:30! Oops! I start with a “big picture cleaning” in every room (putting items away or moving them to their appropriate rooms and picking up trash) then I go back through and do a “clean sweep” which includes putting moved items away and straightening up little things, and finally I do a “cosmetic clean” which entails moving pictures or artwork around, moving furniture that doesn’t quite work where it is, and fixing any feng shui flow blocks.

  3. We also have a day that both sides of the household has a birthday. Makes it interesting πŸ™‚ Glad you got to sleep in! I am trying to work on a schedule of cleaning as well. Going to be homeschooling for the first time this year and trying to get everything on a schedule!

    • Yes, very interesting! I think I’m just going to make my own schedule. I guess that might be the best way, since we know our own households well, right? πŸ™‚ Good luck with the homeschooling – I was homeschooled until 9th grade!

  4. Wow…busy weekend is right! Your mother-in-law’s 50th birthday, huh? My 50th is this Thursday, the 8th…Yeah for all of us great August people!!! I’m sure your dad and mom-in-law will agree…tee hee. I think it’s great that you try to do more chores throughout the week so you can spend more time having fun with the hubby. πŸ™‚ Try to relax a little this coming week…geesh. Looking forward to the Red Velvet Cupcake recipe.

  5. Checked out your Guest Post at Raising Loveliness. Love it! You’ve made some excellent observations and points, and it’s very well written. You’re right, at some point you have to tell yourself that it is okay not to be perfect! πŸ™‚

  6. List it, Plan it has cool cleaning charts. I really need to start using the ones that I have from them again just to help stay on top of things.
Whoever thought that sleeping in would make adults feel like thy have accomplished something? When I was younger I always thought sleeping in was so easy, why were my parents up so early all the time. Haha! Now I know what their “problem” was. πŸ™‚ Glad you got te extra sleep in.

  7. This weekend I accomplished nothing. My mom was in town and my hubby was leaving town. So I accomplished family time, I guess, just nothing ‘productive.” It felt good to be with them and having a wonderful time with them. I had to work at letting go of my to do list for my various projects.

    • See, this coming weekend, Saturday is “The Day of Nothing”. So I’m not sure what all I’ll have to report on Monday…but it feels good to do nothing for a little bit sometimes πŸ™‚ Hope you had a wonderful visit!
