Happy Thursday, all!
We had a jam-packed choir rehearsal at church last night, as we’re prepping for our Christmas program AND we’re prepping for Grandparent’s Day, which is THIS SUNDAY! (Just a point of information for you right there!) Since we’re anticipating having lots of grandparents with us, we pulled some of the beautiful old hymns and were refreshing our memories. And I learned something new! And absolutely beautiful.
“The Love of God” is one of my favorites! Do you know it?
The Love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest start,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure —
The saints’ and angels’ song.
When earthly time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race —
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure —
The saints’ and angels’ song.
But the third verse is the one that’s always gotten to me. It paints such a beautiful picture!
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
Isn’t that just gorgeous! I mean, when I think about the words, I’m simply overwhelmed.
The song was written by Frederick Lehman, that I knew.
A handsome fellow, wasn’t he?
But what our music minister shared with us that I DIDN’T know was this:
Verse three of the song, the last one above that I love so much? It was actually written on the wall of a room in an insane asylum. It was written by a man who was said to be demented, and the lines were only discovered when they placed the man in his coffin. WOW. (Did you just get chills reading that? Because I got chills typing it!) We don’t know who the man was. And I sure wish we did! But, even though everyone thought that man was crazy, and maybe he was…still, he KNEW about the love of God. Incredible.
When words move me, you know me, I go on Pinterest and look for a printable. I found one…but I didn’t like it too much. So, again, I just made my own. Here it is:
If it speaks to you as it did to me, I want you to have it! CLICK HERE to download it and print it for yourself!
My prayer for you is that you KNOW the love of God today!
I’ve never heard/read that hymn before! It’s really pretty. I can’t sing worth a lick so I whisper sing in church, tehehe. =] Our church is very small, about 20 people on average, so there’s no signing out loud without anyone hearing you. Eek! Ha!
Whisper sing…I must try that! LOL
Ya! It sounds a lot better than when you sing out loud when you really can’t sing at all. Hahah!
LOL
This is a new one for me too. Very beautiful.
God is great!
Stopping by from UBC
Thanks for visiting, Karen!
so pretty, thanks!
🙂
Lisa’s favorite too. Nothing can separate us from His love!
Yes, thankfully!
Awesome! As I read this “The Book of Eli” popped in my head. I could see him on his journey to deliver the Bible out West knowing what has happened to the world, yet he kept going until his death. Sometimes I need this gentle reminder Who is everything.
Ah yes, I hadn’t thought of that analogy! Great thoughts!
Beautiful song! I know it in more than one languages! We were just singing it at bible camp last month. So touching and so true: God loves us!
Pinning it, so Pinterest gets full of it!
Thank you, Anna!
Wow! That is amazing that that was written by someone who was thought to be crazy! It is beautiful and deep.
I know, it really floored me! Glad you enjoyed!
I’ve never heard this hymn before, but you’re right, it’s beautiful, very moving. The story regarding the third verse is amazing. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece and for making it into a printable. 🙂

I’ve never heard this one either, but gosh that 3rd verse is beautiful. The man might not have been crazy. They used to put all sorts of people in there that weren’t insane, just different, or some other such thing. Regardless of his sanity, his words are beautiful.
I know, I thought that he couldn’t have been crazy to write such a beautiful thing!
I’ve never heard this song before but I do love the words. I’m going to google the music for it as well. I also love that printable. Something that can be framed.
I’m glad you enjoyed!
That was a beautiful story about the third verse! The words are so great! Thanks for sharing!
🙂
Beautiful! I will be sharing this for sure!
Thank you! 🙂
I haven’t heard of this one either but it is pretty =) Thanks for sharing!
