Several years back, I made a fresh strawberry pie. The filling and home-made whipped cream were perfect…but the crust was a bust. I’m not even joking. It was awful. And I decided then that perhaps I just wasn’t one of those people who made pies.
Why not use a prepared crust, you ask? That’s just not exactly my style. When I’m baking, I like to bake from scratch. And I was so intimidated by pies I let several years go by without even touching a pie recipe.
That all changed a few weeks before Thanksgiving, when I was assigned “pies”.
I realized that I had a choice. I could go to the freezer section and pick out the most beautiful pies I could find, or I could get over my fear of pie crusts and figure it out and just DO it.
So I posed a question to my Facebook friends about pie crusts, and before I knew it, I had been given this link:
http://redheadcandecorate.com/4/post/2012/09/julies-easy-dutch-apple-pie.html
Do you see that recipe for pie crust? The one with only four ingredients?! I couldn’t believe it. So I had to test it myself, of course.
I was pretty impressed with how it turned out, and it was SO EASY!!!
So, for Thanksgiving, I used the above crust and made a Mississippi Pecan Pie (http://lifewithlorelai.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/mississippi-pecan-pie-printable-recipe/)
…a Dutch Apple Pie (http://www.ohsweetbasil.com/2013/11/dutch-apple-pie-with-white-chocolate-butter-sauce.html)
…and a Marshmallow Whipped Pumpkin Pie (http://kitchenmeetsgirl.com/marshmallow-pumpkin-pie/) (Well, the Marshmallow Whipped Pumpkin Pie uses a graham cracker crust…but I made that from scratch, too!)
I was pretty thrilled with how everything turned out! So were the partakers of the pies! And I’ve got to say, this pie crust recipe is a HUGE WINNER!
What your best pie crust tip?

Great post! I also love to bake but I tend to over-think things sometimes instead of just sticking my neck out there and going for it! This looks delicious! It’s only 8:20am where I am and now I want pie! Oh goodness it’s going to be a long day 🙂
Yes, I understand, I’m a big overthinker, too! HA! Pie for all!!! 🙂
I don’t make pies because frankly, I am not really much of a baker. My sister on the other hand makes some killer pies, so I will have to tell her about this.
Oh, she’s probably way more advanced than this then!
Skip the crust. 🙂 I am a really bad crust maker as well, when we do have pie I always try a different crust recipe hoping I will somehow find the perfect crust for me. Have you tried a GF version of this crust?
I have not! That’s a good idea though!
Those pictures are making my mouth water, I haven’t had a decent pie in ages!
Can you send one over?!
😀
HA! Sure, I’ll get right on that LOL
Ah, a woman after my own heart! I am not willing to take shortcuts either, and darn it, if I set out to do something I WILL accomplish it. Your pies look lovely! It took me about five years to come up with an awesome pie crust recipe, and now I am diligently working on creating a whole wheat pie crust that is to die for. My favorite way to eat pie crust is with cinnamon infused into it via an extract or ground cinnamon added, and my pie crust tip for you is use lard and KEEP EVERYTHING COLD! That makes the very best flaky pie crusts you will ever come up with!
Hope you have a wonderful Tuesday!
Blessings to you,

Oh, a whole wheat pie crust! What a great idea, Heather! You can feel better about eating pies with a healthier crust, right?! 🙂
Ok, so I’ve got my coffee and reading posts online. Then I come across this and my stomach is now growling like a wolf! The pictures make me want to reach in a grab a piece. I love pies! Especially apple and pumpkin, but (like you said), I’m also not very good with the crust. I’m definitely going to try this EASY recipe and make me some apple pie! Thanks so much for sharing.
Enjoy your apple pie, Cherie! 🙂
That is awesome, a pie crust recipe with out lard! Thank you for sharing. Pinning it!
Just a tad bit healthier, right? Thanks for the pin!
I always go for store bought crust! This one looks so good! I am going to check it out. Thanks for sharing this.
Sure thing! 🙂
Thank you for sharing this! I have never made a pie crust on my own and even my mother in law said she doesn’t even try anymore. I guess I will share this with her!
Please do! I was so surprised at how easy this was!
I’m a bad crust maker too. But i will give this one a try! I love pie!
Do try and let us know how it worked out for you!
One thing I’ve never had a problem with was pie crust but I hear all the time how difficult or daunting it can be for some people. My mother says that I just have a knack for it. I say that when you find a recipe that works for you, hang on to it! Anything to make your life easier.
Yes, I’m a fan of an easier life LOL I’m glad someone knows how to do it well like you, or else there would be NO pies! And that would just be sad.
Is this a doughy or flaky crust? It looks flaky but sometimes looks can be deceiving!
It’s flaky! Amazingly so! I don’t see how, but it is!
I always give up when it comes to making a pie crust. My mom showed me a thousand times it never comes out right, I cheat and buy the ready made :). Yours looks great!
Oh, you can do this! I promise!
Your Mississippi Pecan Pie turned out great! I love the way you lined the crust with whole pecans. 🙂 I’m so glad you are over your fear of pie baking. Thanks for the shout out! 🙂

It did! It was so easy, thank you for that recipe! Hope you are well, Lorelai! 🙂
Oh Yum.. and my husband would be so happy if I learned how to make a blueberry pie! (all our frozen berries from the backyard). I am such a terrible cook, baker.. I really should just take the chance and try this 🙂 I think you’ve given me a bit of courage!
I came across a recipe for Blueberry Pie Cookies yesterday that looked scrumptious! I think you SHOULD try!!! You can do it!!!
That sure did come out great! And the pecan pie came out wonderful!
Yes indeed! I was happy!
Oh my, I’d like to come to your house for Thanksgiving! Those all sound wonderful. I have yet to brave making my own pie crust. I keep thinking I just don’t have time. But this one may just be the ticket 🙂 Pinning so I can find it again!
You are welcome for Thanksgiving any time! Thanks for pinning!
